| The very first day Roger met me he learned, "minus the green stuff" is my signature phrase. Since then, it has been a running joke that they never have to worry about me with running out of vegetables at dinner. Unlike some of my other travel experiences, this one has been filled with all sorts of wonderful, familiar meals. Roger and Kaye do not eat much seafood at all (though we did eat fish one night from a fish that Kaye caught!), and they eat a lot of chicken. Needless to say, I'm a happy camper. Though they have made me some very delicious home-cooked meals over the weeks, I've neglected to take any photos. I have, however, captured some of my favorite meals from restaurants, as shown above. From left to right, then top to bottom: Eat a Pizza's Small "Hawaiian Pizza" with garlic base instead of tomato. Kaye and Roger are regulars at this restaurant in town, and the owner treats them very well. Since Kaye has developed an allergy to tomatoes, the owner makes a garlic based pizza for her, and since I prefer garlic to tomato, I ordered it that way as well. We've been back since our first visit, and the pizza never disappoints. Eat a Pizza's "Caramel dessert." Again, a favorite of Kaye and Roger's. Believe it or not, I've eaten more sweets here than I have in the past 22 years of my life. Dessert is not just a suggestion at meals here; it's another expected course. A table full of Chinese food with Poppy and Harry, Kaye and Roger's close friends. Though the owner of the restaurant has changed since the owner Kaye and Roger have been regulars with, this owner did not disappoint. She not only encouraged Roger and Harry and I to try the Chinese beer, but she also looked after us, making sure everything we had was up to our standards. Honey chicken and the steak dishes were to my liking, but I also tried the fish and shrimp dishes--skipping only the vegetable dish. Add a bit of steamed rice and chopsticks, and the night was very much a success. Prickles' sangria, cheesy garlic bread, taquitos, and chicken burrito completely took care of my Mexican food craving. Warwick, a family friend, and I went here after a long day traveling through the bush in the outback, and it was a nice way to end the night. Although I ate way, way too much. Very close second to El Charro's. PeeWee's Riverina Grain Fed Eye Fillet (220G) with potato rosti, celeriac cream, chasseur sauce, and roasted vine tomatoes. If you have no idea what that just said, neither did I. This restaurant was so fancy that as soon as we sat down the waitress put our cloth napkins on our laps and poured our wine glasses for us. Darren, a family friend, took me here after a long week. It is a restaurant on the water, is a host to many weddings, and has won the award for three years in a row for the best standalone restaurant in the Northern Territory. However, the $55 price tag on the fillet was quite shocking for the quality of the meal itself. Was definitely not a $55 meal according to my tummy. And of course for dessert, we had to order the "Chocolate Slut," a chocolate dish of chocolate pieces, brownie/cake, and raspberry filling with raspberry ice cream. Trailer Boat Club's Chicken Schnitzel with plain gravy and chips. Chicken Schnitzel was the very first meal I had at a restaurant here in Darwin at Tim's for my birthday. And it has easily grown to be one of my favorites. It proved to be no different here at the TBC, as we've been there twice and I've ordered this both times. Beachfront's Slider with burger, egg, barbecue sauce, cheese, and bacon (minus the lettuce and tomato), with chips. Completely, 100% fed my burger craving. It was delicious, and it was the perfect size. 1 slider and chips for $12. |
